Theatre classes are considered electives at Campus High School and qualify as a fine arts credit. Involvement in theatre arts is associated with scholastic gains in math, reading, cognitive ability, critical thinking, as well as verbal skills. Learning in the fine arts is also shown to improve a student’s aptitude, increase motivation, find focus and concentration, develop more confidence, and establish leadership and teamwork.
Theatre I – This is an introductory class open to all grades. This course studies acting in its various forms; pantomime, improvisation, monologues, and scene work are all included. Students will be required to memorize dialogue for presentation during class. Additional topics include character analysis, criticism, and script writing.
Theatre II – (Prerequisite: Theatre I) This is a performance course for specialization in various acting techniques. This course provides training for those students interested in extending training from Acting I. These topics include auditioning, ensemble production, directing, method acting, and script analysis. Students will be required to memorize dialogue for presentation during class. Some out-of-class time is required for production experience. Students prepare either a traveling one-act for the grade schools, or an evening of one acts for family and friends. This year’s choices are Hey Diddle, Diddle (fall) and Storytime and An Evening With Edgar Allen Poe (spring).
Advanced Theatre – (Prerequisite for auditioning: Theatre II or major/minor role in a Mane Stage production with teacher permission) This is an audition class. Students must have completed Theatre I and II, prepare a one minute monologue for a panel of judges and pass the audition to be admitted to class. In addition to working on advanced skills, this class prepares a Mane Stage production each semester, chosen from a variety of genres. This year the plays will be a Mystery Dinner - Diary of a Burning Woman (fall) and Gathering Blue (spring). In addition to acting, students will take on leadership roles of student director, stage manager or designer.
Stagecraft – (Teacher signature required on enrollment sheet) This is a hands-on class that designs and builds the sets for all productions, works on making, altering, crafting or finding all costumes and props for productions, does a unit on theatre makeup and works with students interested in the technical aspects of light and sound. We also provide technical support for other activities in the theatre, including concerts, assemblies and speakers. After school construction time may be required.
Teacher Assistant - If an advanced student wants to experiment with directing, being a TA for one of the Theatre II classes is the way to go. A TA who student directs is responsible for auditioning, casting and rehearsals (with assistance from Mrs. Stitt).
